NEWSLETTER November 2012

Message from The Area Coordinator
As you can see from the statistics, the police have been very active in dealing with crime, but it is  worrying to see so many offences occurring in the same streets - PLEASE KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR SUSPICIOUS BEHAVIOUR & REPORT TO Crestmead Police Station or the Police Communications branch (phone numbers overleaf). The stealing from vehicles offences are in double figures & with the festive season coming up, please take care to lock your vehicles & ensure all valuable property is removed from sight lock in glove box or in the boot-don’t give criminals any temptation. Graffiti is again on the rise & with school holidays coming up we need to ensure that buildings & signs are not defaced remember it is your money that is spent to remove the graffiti. Ring the hotline if you see an offence to enable it to be removed.
With the holidays nearly here once again remember to check your vehicle before setting off on the road & ensure that you stop, revive & survive - ie take a break every couple of hours of driving.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have helped NHW this year by attending our events and meetings. Why not make a new year’s resolution to come along to a meeting next year & become part of the community - we need more members to give new ideas & aims for the group to
continue - come along to our AGM on November 26th & see what we have achieved & what we hope to do next year.
Stay safe on the roads, ensure your property is locked & protected & let your neighbours know if you are going away. Again don’t give any temptation to the criminals out there - they don’t take a holiday! Take care and have a safe and happy festive season.
Geoff

STRANGER DANGER
The term may be a misnomer since 85% of abuse or
danger to children may be from people who are known or
trusted by the child. The aim is to teach children to be
safe, be aware of predatory strangers & be self protective.
It is a delicate balance of raising awareness, without unnecessarily
alarming children. It is equally important to
emphasise that the majority of adults are caring, loving &
responsible - not ‘bad people’. A typical predator will be
dressed in friendly clothes, be funny or ingratiating &
more likely nice & enticing & bearing treats & offers.

ACTIVE PROTECTIVE BEHAVIOUR
Teach your child :
never to wander off or go out of sight
to always walk and stay with friends - never go alone.
practice saying NO loudly and repeatedly, if they are unsure.
to yell HELP, as loudly & repeatedly as possible until
they are heard. Predators hate noise and attention.
to find a safe adult (policeman or a mum with a stroller) or
a safe spot if they are fearful, such as a school, shop or
safety sign. However don’t tell your child that all
uniforms are safe as some predators do wear them.
Encourage your child to ‘’tell’’ if they felt scared, unsure
or uncomfortable or ‘’yucky’’ with any adult.
Affirm that you will be happy to praise them for telling
they won’t be in trouble, and that you will listen and believe
them.
Be alert to behaviour or interaction, from a relative or
friend that makes you or your child feel uncomfortable.
Also to any overly ingratiating or endearing behaviour
which can lead to separation of child and parent.
Explain to your child in age appropriate terms where
touching is NOT OK such as touching mouths and areas
covered by their swimming costumes.
Be aware for a combination of warning signs of potential
danger - the greatest indicator is a change in several behaviours -
a return to bedwetting, nightmares or disturbed
sleep, or the sudden onset of phobias such as fear of the
dark or leaving the house.

Everyone knows that drinking & driving is dangerous, but so is drinking & walking!Pedestrians and motorists need to look out for
each other’s safety when they’re on (or near) the
road.
Last year more than 12% (or 33 fatalities) of the
road toll was pedestrians, of which 15 were alcohol
impaired. A trend that is on the rise –50%
higher than it was in 2010.
Of the 15 alcohol impaired pedestrian fatalities,
one-third were aged 30–39. Meanwhile one-third
were female and two-thirds were male. These
statistics indicate that people are unaware of the
dangers associated with walking while under the
influence of alcohol and the deadly consequences.
As a pedestrian you should always stay on the
footpath and only cross the road at marked
crossings, lights or other designated areas. If
you are planning on drinking AND walking to or
from a bar, club, party, etc then try to walk with
a group of sober friends to reduce your risk of
injury.
Meanwhile motorists should remember when
driving in heavily populated areas to reduce
speed & keep an eye out for pedestrians.

Prescription, over-the-counter & recreational drugs don’t belong behind the wheel! If you’re using any of the above then you should
plan ahead to avoid driving while under the influence.
Drugs can be incredibly dangerous, making
it hard to safely and competently ‘operate
heavy machinery’… like drive a car. Common
effects of drugs on driving can include:
  • slow your reaction time
  • affect your reflexes
  • reduce your concentration
  • distort your perception of speed and distance impair judgment.
So make sure you ask your pharmacist or doctor
if your prescription &/or over-the-counter medication
will affect your driving ability.
Don’t even think about driving after taking illegal
drugs. Police conduct regular random roadside
drug tests that can detect cannabis/marijuana,
speed, ice and ecstasy. If caught the penalties
are significant.

NEWSLETTER October 2012

Message from The Area Coordinator
Please take note that the phone number for the Police Communications covering Logan and the Gold Coast has now changed to 3445 8000. By the time you receive this newsletter the identity theft/fraud talk will probably have taken place and I hope that those of you who attend(ed) will be much better informed of the tricks that some criminals use. Just remember if it sounds too good to be true - IT USUALLY IS! Also now is a timely reminder to ensure your WI FI safety information regarding this is available on the police website www.police.qld.gov.au
IDENTITY THEFT/FRAUD TALK CRESTMEAD COMMUNITY CENTRE
Sunday October 21st 2.30pm
Did you know that instead of reporting offences by phone you can do so on line? Email address is policelink@police.qld.gov.au and again on the police website there are examples of what information is needed.
The new Commissioner of Police is Ian Stewart who played such an important role in last year’s floods crisis.
We wish him well in his new role and also wish Bob Atkinson a very enjoyable retirement he was well respected and a man of integrity.
We hope to hold an end of year party in one of the Crestmead parks during November information will be on our Facebook page and website plus notices will be in the local free papers. Don’t forget our AGM will be at the November meeting and I encourage you to become involved in our community organisation.
I look forward to seeing you at one of the next community events.
Take care Geoff

REMEMBER SCHOOL ZONE
SPEED LIMITS ARE IN FORCE
7am—9am & 2pm—4pm
DURING SCHOOL TERMS

END OF YEAR ACTIVITIES—KEEP SAFE AND SECURE
As you are aware it will soon be that time of year again HALLOWEEN leading to SCHOOLIES and then THE FESTIVE SEASON all times when we should be aware of situations that can be dangerous.
With Halloween just remember that not all folk like to be bothered with the door knocking and then follow up behaviour by some people of ‘’egging’’ their property just for failing to open the door or give into the trick or treat message. If you have young children be sure they are accompanied by a responsible person don’t let them go out walking the streets alone each is too precious to allow anything to happen to them.
Schoolies is too much of a temptation to some youngsters who are on the brink of their adult lives.
We all remember the ONE PUNCH CAN KILL campaign started with a young man being hit and subsequently dying for absolutely no reason at all drink and drugs can affect people differently and the police will charge parents who supply their children with alcohol to take to these schoolies events - if the atmosphere is good enough, you don’t need alcohol to enjoy yourself. There is the possibility of drink driving incidents, older people taking advantage of teenagers, causing damage and even death from over-doing the ‘party spirit’.
Festive season of course will involve too many temptations for some if you are going out and drinking make sure you have a non drinker in your party to be nominated driver or take a cab. Don’t take chances with parties being affected by gate crashers. Register your event with the police through the PARTY SAFE scheme and don’t advertise on Facebook!! Don’t swim if affected by drink or drugs and if you are out with mates - keep an eye on each others drinks so they are not spiked.
WE ALL WANT TO WELCOME 2013 & ENJOY ANOTHER YEAR WITH OUR LOVED ONES

NEWSLETTER September 2012

Message from The Area Coordinator
I hope that the information in this newsletter will provide you or someone you know of some sobering facts regarding the road toll for last year. We must try and reduce the number of lives lost or damaged each year through pointless actions. As you can see out of 269 deaths last year, 244 were due to WRONG CHOICES made by a motorist. So in effect only 25 deaths were due to ACTUAL ACCIDENTS!!
The IDENTITY THEFT/FRAUD TALK is being held at Crestmead Community Centre on Sunday October 21st at 2.30pm. I would encourage you to come along and find out about the latest scams and attempts at stealing the most important thing in your life your identity. This seems to be the fastest growing crime and even the most wary of people will find some new attempt being made each day. You are most welcome to come and enjoy an afternoon tea with Crestmead Neighbourhood Watch group, there will be safe plate screws available for attachment to your car to prevent registration plates being stolen. We will also have police in attendance to answer your queries on other matters relating to crime. If you require transport we are hoping to have use of a mini bus so please email /ring me for further details.
The annual LOGAN LOVES VOLUNTEERS event takes place on October 14th between 4pm-8pm at Underwood Park, Priestdale. The Volunteer of the Year award closes on Friday 28th September so if you know someone who deserves to be recognized for their work in the community don’t miss out on voting for them. I look forward to seeing you at one of the next community events.
Take care Geoff

NEWSLETTER August 2012

Message from The Area Coordinator
We have had quite a chilly spell so hope that you have all kept warm and also kept an eye on your neighbours who may not be as active or able to do things as easily in the cold weather. A friendly knock on the door to see if they are ok and need any help would be much appreciated by our older and less mobile residents. It will soon be spring and we can get out and about in the garden again perhaps you could offer to help with some tidying up or planting of bulbs/seeds.
Just checking on your neighbours makes a big difference to many people’s lives & goes a long way in the ’’feel good factor’’ - try it!!
A belated happy birthday to Crestmead PCYC who last month celebrated 3 years in the community. With the wide range of activities available for ALL age groups, come along and support the programmes on offer.
Well done to Sgt Mel Cowie and her team who have made such a difference to the area.
Also congratulations to Beth Henry who won the Employee Excellence award at the recent Logan West Leader Business Achiever Awards. Another winner at the awards was Crestmead Friendly Grocer in Julie Street, so well done to Baz Rizk & family & staff for their hard work & thanks for their support to NHW.
Congratulations to the Woodlands NHW group who held their launch in mid August this just goes to show more groups are starting up than closing! I would like to extend this invitation to you to come along to one of our meetings at the PCYC building and become an active part of YOUR community.
Take care Geoff

NEWSLETTER July 2012

Message from The Area Coordinator
Rather worrying statistics this month with the number of vehicle offences sharply increasing quite apart from the number of people who have been booked for speeding, drink and drug driving. Perhaps some of the information given in this leaflet will be of help but the message must be for owners to be much more vigilant in protecting their property. The recent Logan City Council initiative OPERATION BOUNCE BACK to protect those vehicles which do not have immobilisers fitted was a great success in allowing another 100 vehicles to be protected. However too often vehicles are left unlocked or with valuables on show which is too much of a temptation for criminals to break in and steal.
Crestmead PCYC second Grey Light Disco was a hit with participants enjoying music from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. We saw the competitive side of many dancers during the dance competitions with a first timer taking out one of the prizes and the 40+ president winning the lucky door prize. Next disco is on 7th September 6pm - 8pm. For more information please phone 3805 4100.
Marsden State School is holding a winter carnival on Saturday July 28th between 10am and 4pm on the school oval. Support one of the local P&C’s in our area and enjoy the fun with or without your children!
If I can be of any help with matters of concern please contact me by email crestmeadnhw@hotmail.com or by using our FACEBOOK page crestmeadnhw

If you would like to receive a copy of the LOGAN DISTRICT CRIME BULLETIN, or to make an enquiry or give any feedback email: dcpc.Logan@police.qld.gov.au. A lot of information is contained in the bulletin and there are photos of some alleged offenders you may be able to help solve a crime

VEHICLE SAFETY INFORMATION
· Remember to lock all doors and close windows on vehicles - even when in driveway
· Remove all valuables from sight - lock in boot or glove box and remove GPS AND
holder- if still attached to screen it is obvious that you have one so the car may be broken into
· Do not type in ‘home’ to GPS since if car or device is stolen, the thieves will have an ideal way to find your property to rob whilst you are still looking for your car!
· Lock garage and shed doors even when at home- sneak thieves can take just a moment to get in and steal tools and items of value- do not leave ladders in view since they can be used to break into your home
· Don’t leave your spare key somewhere ‘’handy’’ - under the wheel arch is just too obvious
· Same goes for your keys at home - if a thief can see keys through your security screen door on the hall table - they could just break in and steal whilst you are watching tv or you are in the garden etc
STOLEN CARS ARE OFTEN USED IN OTHER CRIMES
YOUR INSURANCE WILL BE AFFECTED AS WELL AS THE INCONVENIENCE
DON’T MAKE LIFE EASY FOR CRIMINALS

NEWSLETTER June 2012

Message from The Area Coordinator
A big thank you to Crestmead Police for hosting our last meeting in May when we were joined by Michael Pucci the new MLA representative for Logan. We were very pleased that Mr Pucci managed to attend our meeting before heading back to Parliament for another meeting, and we look forward to implementation of the promises made by the new government in relation to laws and sentencing. As you can see with the statistics for the past month, the police are managing to track down the criminals but we need tougher sentencing to stop the repeat offenders. Of course we must do all we can to minimize the possibility of becoming a victim of crime which can be taking just simple measures.· Lock your doors - even when inside your home.
A sneak thief can be in and out of your home without you hearing so don’t give them the opportunity.
Lock garages and sheds tools and ladders can be used to break in.
· Lock your vehicles even when parked in your driveway. Put valuables out of sight and don’t leave GPS systems attached to the windscreen.
· Have safe plate screws fitted to your vehicle this will prevent the registration plates being
stolen and used for other vehicle crimes.
· Review your home and vehicles security. Often insurance premiums are reduced if you have window locks, burglar alarms etc fitted. Contact your local police station to arrange a safety audit.
· Mark valuables with microdots or engraving
I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting,
Take care Geoff

Identity theft information
At a recent Logan West Library information session regarding identity theft, advice was given that many break and enter crimes do not necessarily take plasma TV’s, laptops etc. The current wave of crimes involve much more easily transportable items electricity accounts, phone bills etc which are often stuck to the fridge or easily to hand these are major items which can be used to steal YOUR IDENTITY!!
We are planning to provide another fraud and identity theft information session and we will advise details of date & venue in a later newsletter.
Please ensure that your documents are stored in a safe place you would probably not notice forms and paper items until a later date when it was time to pay large items of value are not always the target of opportunist thieves.

NEWSLETTER May 2012

Message from The Area Coordinator
Congratulations to Crestmead PCYC for a very successful CAOS & once again the younger members of our community had a great opportunity to see what is available with the PCYC. However it is there to be used by ALL AGES so if there is a pursuit you may be interested in, give the PCYC a call. They are also looking for more volunteers (as is Crestmead NHW) so if you have time on your hands perhaps you would like to help out. Phone 3805 4100.
The first Grey Light Disco was held at the Community Centre & I am sure that all those who were there agreed it was a great idea why should the youngsters have all the fun? Music from 50’s, 60’s & 70’s, a light supper & drinks available all for a very reasonable $10 entry.
The next one will be held in July so get your dancing shoes ready & have a great evening 6pm - 8pm.
We had a very interesting talk from the community education officer at Logan City Council Animal & Pest Management. The new animal laws were outlined & many of you may not be aware of the recent changes.
Contact LCC 3412 3412 for more information.
Some of our members are door knocking to gain signatures for a petition to request the state government to address the inconsistency of sentencing & to increase the number of Police on the beat. If you would like a copy of the petition to circulate to friends and relatives, please contact me on the email address overleaf.
Finally congratulations to the residents of Berrinba East who have recently set up their new NHW group. We wish them every success.
I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting at the

The new laws offer more flexibility for the types of animals you can keep on your property & an approval system exists if you wish to keep MORE than the allowable number. All cats should be microchipped & discounted registration fees apply to desexed cats. A discounted desexing & microchipping clinic is available to pension & concession card holders at the Combined

Barking dog nuisances are one of the most common complaints received by council if you lodge a complaint you will be requested to maintain a log of times & for how long the barking/howling or whining takes place.
Make sure your dog has access to a clean bowl of fresh water every day, has adequate shelter, has a daily exercise routine & is not sick or injured. Dogs are social animals and can bark due to stress of being lelft alone or through plain boredom. ENSURE THAT YOU PICK UP & DISPOSE OF YOUR DOG’S DROPPINGS, take a doggy bag with you. Fines apply if you don’t do the right thing.

NEWSLETTER April 2012

Message from The Area Coordinator
The speaker for our last meeting from Seniors Enquiry Line gave us one of the best talks we have had. What a wealth of knowledge from Cheryl and I must thank her for all the information she passed on to our group. If you need assistance relating to matters for seniors & grandparents raising grandchildren or advance care planning for later in life, don’t hesitate to contact the SENIORS ENQUIRY LINE see enclosed flyer for contact details. I would like to thank all those who supported our recent Community Booksale at Logan West library. We were able to provide free safe plate screws as well as a good read for less than $2 and also sold a large number of sausages and drinks. These occasional fundraising activities enable us to provide the Safe PL8 screws and door guards to help make the community safer. So if you see our future advertising please support us and you may want to join the group - we have a good social network and if you are new to the area you will be able to make new friends. We will be at the Crestmead PCYC CAOS on Saturday April 21st so please come along & say hi. Let us know what YOU want for the suburb - what can we do to help engage the youngsters & make Crestmead a safe & happy place to raise your family.
Our May meeting will be held at the Crestmead Police Station & we will have a speaker from Queensland Police to answer your questions on crime and traffic matters.
We are again selling ENTERTAINMENT GUIDES -  only $65 & you will save that amount over and over during the next year. Contact details overleaf to purchase a copy.
Take care Geoff

WINTER SAFETY TIPS
· Install & maintain your smoke alarms: make sure you have an adequate number of suitable smoke alarms installed throughout your home & make sure you test & clean them regularly & change the battery annually
· Prepare and practice your Escape Plan: Develop a home escape plan and practice it with all members of the household. Assemble at your meeting point—eg letter box. Ring Qld Fire and Rescue Service from a neighbours house. NEVER go back into a burning house
· Check and Test your Electric Blankets: Check blankets for damage or frayed cords before placing them on the bed. To test an electric blanket, lay it flat on top of the bed, & then switch it on for five minutes to confirm it is OK, before affixing it to the bed.
It is recommended that they are turned on half an hour before going to bed & then turned off at the power point when getting into bed. Never sleep with the electric blanket on.
· Regularly clean your Clothes Dryer: Clean lint filter regularly. Don’t leave on for long periods of time & especially if you are leaving the house. Make sure they go through their full cycles, which includes cool down.
· Stay clear 1metre around your Heaters: Portable heating equipment should be placed in a stable position, a safe distance away from clothes curtains, tablecloths, and bedding. Keep a clear space of 1 metre around heaters.
CONTACT YOUR LOCAL FIRE STATION FOR FURTHER ADVICE

NEWSLETTER March 2012

Message from The Area Coordinator
Following the incredible wet weather recently please make sure that you allow extra stopping distances in your car journeys and also NEVER enter floodwaters even though you may feel that you know the roads and areas well enough. We were advised by the staff at PCYC how quickly the drains at Crestmead Park became raging torrents and could easily have sucked a body through with the force of the water. Therefore all parents and carers ensure that you are aware of where your youngsters are since the weather can change in an instant and as we know lives have been lost when people have thought they could just get through that one last obstacle.
Don’t forget that April 1st is officially the day that the Qld Fire and Rescue service remind us all to replace the batteries in our smoke alarms. As their motto goes - DON’T BE AN APRIL FOOL - after the tragic events of last year with so many lives lost from house fires during the winter we should all remember that having a working smoke alarm is literally a LIFESAVER. For the cost of a new battery you owe it to your loved ones to make sure the battery is working - how about replacing one for an aged or infirm neighbour too?
We are having a book sale at the Logan West library at the end of the month and we will be offering to affix safe plate screws to registration plates so come along and get a bargain book or CD, and have a sausage and or drink whilst you are waiting. Don’t forget the inconvenience and cost of replacing stolen registration plates can be avoided by taking this offer - otherwise contact your local police station. Our speaker this month will have information for grandparents raising grandchildren and a free state wide information and referral service for seniors both of which are very important subjects. I hope to see you soon
Take care Geoff

HOONING
Making Logan's streets as safe as possible is a priority for Logan City Council and Deputy Mayor Russell Lutton (Division 2) is calling on residents to help put the brakes on hooning in the city's streets. Chairman of the Logan Road Safety Advisory Committee, Cr Lutton acknowledged like many communities throughout Australia, hooning was a problem in some sections of the city.
''Alongside barking dogs, hooning is certainly one of the main issues residents contact individual councillors and Council about,'' he said. ''As a Council we certainly acknowledge & recognise the importance of doing what we can to prevent hooning behaviour whether it be irresponsible drivers doing burn outs, screeching their brakes, driving as a rolling road block, or street racing.
''Regardless of the nature of hooning, it is clearly dangerous and can be the cause of the driver responsible losing control of their vehicle.
''But there is a limit to what a Council can do. Wherever possible we install traffic calming devices but that isn't enough.''
Cr Lutton said addressing the issue of hooning was primarily the responsibility of the police. He said the establishment of the Hoon Hotline in December 2010 was an important step in the community taking a stand against hooning.
''Information provided to the Hoon Hotline is relayed to the police for further investigation, allows them to locate hooning hotspots, and take action to try and prevent its reoccurrence,'' he said.
''To assist police with their investigation, reports of a hooning offence should include the details of the behaviour observed, the car's registration and characteristics, and a time and location of the incident.
''I don't know if anyone has the definitive solution to the problem of hooning but with the police and Council working together through the Hoon Hotline & our traffic calming devices, we hope to make an impact.''

What an interesting talk we had from our speaker at the January meeting Susan Teerds CEO from Kidsafe. For all of you who have the care and safety of young ones, I do recommend that you check with the website www.kidsafeqld.com.au a wealth of information which can help prevent serious injury or even death of our most precious resource. With TV’s becoming lighter and slimmer, and more prone to tipping, this can be easily avoided by using Crests new TV Safety Strap that attaches the TV to the cabinet or wall. On sale at Kidsafe House for $20 or $30 for 2sets plus p&h.
A really bad month as you can see for offences in January, so please be more vigilant with locking your property - both homes and vehicles. If you want a safety audit contact your local police station for advice, for identification you can purchase microchip kits from PCYC or use engraving tools again available through your local police station. Finally with your vehicles keep valuables out of sight, doors locked even in your driveways and make sure that garage and shed doors are locked. When you are at home, lock security doors and remove keys and reduce the chance of sneak thieves calling by leaving windows open, even if you are only in the rear garden -it only takes a few minutes.
Thanks to all the supporters of our recent bbq it really kicked off the new year well for us, and we have our next fundraising venture at the Logan West Library on 31st March 9am to 2pm. The Community Benefit Booksale will also have magazines, audio books and cds for sale nothing over $2 and we will also have a bbq and drinks for sale.
Finally we say goodbye to Snr Sgt Col Henderson on his promotion we thank him for his help over the years and wish him every success. Also Happy 15th birthday to Marsden NHW!! I look forward to seeing you soon.
Take care Geoff

Home security
Property owners can greatly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of a burglary by implementing measures to improve the security of their home. These measures can be simple and don’t necessarily need to cost a lot of money. For example:
Get to know your neighbours. Exchange telephone numbers and keep and eye on each other’s homes. Observant neighbours can reduce prowling, loitering and burglary by reporting suspicious people or vehicles to police.
Even when you are at home, be aware of your home security and ensure doors and windows are secured, particularly in areas that are unoccupied.
Before you hire a professional house cleaner or gardener, check all references thoroughly.
Secure your home when you leave by locking all doors and windows. Many burglars simply enter through an unlocked door or window. Remove keys from internal doors and windows when you are not at home.
If you have a faulty alarm that frequently goes off, get it fixed immediately and tell your neighbours that it's been repaired. Many people ignore an alarm that goes off regularly.
Ask for credentials from all salespersons who request entry to your home. If you're doubtful, check with the person's office before letting him or her in.
Give your home the “lived in” look when you’re out by leaving a light on and the radio playing. Timing devices are effective for this. When you are not at home, adjust the ringing volume down on your telephone so it is not obvious the home is unoccupied.
Keep cash, keys & valuables out of sight & out of easy reach.
Don’t leave notes on the door as they suggest that no one is home.
Don’t leave a house key under the door mat or a pot plant, in the letterbox or in other obvious places.
Ensure you house/unit number is clearly visible so it can be located quickly in an emergency.
Mark valuable property using the Property Identification System.
Know which doors and windows you can use as an exit in an emergency so you can leave quickly and safely.
In an emergency always ring triple zero (000).
Use the speed dial of your telephone to record other important numbers.

NEWSLETTER January 2011

Message from The Area Coordinator
Thankfully not such a wet start to the year as last year but hope that you all had an enjoyable break over the past few weeks. Amazing to think that school is almost back so please take extra special care when driving around school zones. Having had a few weeks of not having to consider the 40kph signs around schools it is possible that you forgot the times that you must slow down. However do be aware that during the year speed zones will be amended to a uniform 7am—9am and 2pm to 4pm unless specifically signed so please pay attention that changes will be made between now and April 2012. The times that you may be used to could be changed.
We have had a terrible time over the festive season with road accidents and many lives have been lost or forever scarred needlessly through taking unnecessary risks or just not enough attention. So starting this year please leave just a little earlier for each journey, leave your mobile in the bag or your pocket, and make sure that your vehicle is roadworthy with tyre pressures set correctly etc. No phone message is that important that you must answer it whilst driving and certainly there is no excuse for texting whilst driving . However clever you may be you cannot do those two things at once with 100% concentration on the road!!
We have some big things planned this year so hope to meet some of you during the next few months as you can see I have been elected for a further year as area coordinator and I thank my fellow committee members for their help and support to make things happen for the benefit of the population of Crestmead. Please come along to our meetings and events they are for the community you never know you may find that bit of information you have been looking for!!
Our first meeting of the year will be held on the last Monday of the month and we have the CEO of Kidsafe to show us a range of items that will keep our precious youngsters safer. www.kidsafeqld.com.au There will be demonstrations in the car park outside the community
centre of the reversing camera black spots that have claimed so many lives over the past few years.
I hope that you will enjoy our events for the year
Take care Geoff

TEACH YOUR CHILD AN IMPORTANT LESSON BEFORE THEY START SCHOOL
Parents play a vital role in their child’s education, development and future. One of the most important lessons you could ever teach them is the fundamentals of road safety.
You should walk with your children to destinations such as their school and your local shops whenever possible and accompany them until you are confident they have a well developed road sense. Remember that children under the age of 10 should always be accompanied by an adult.
Be sure to point out any potential hazards and get them comfortable with important road safety actions such as crossing the road safely, watching for vehicles coming in and out of driveways and other safe pedestrian behaviours.
If children are going to walk to school throughout the year, walk with them and show them the safest route to and from school, this usually is the way with the least amount of traffic and the fewest roads to cross. Children should be taught to walk on the footpath rather than the road and not to play with toys or balls when walking.
Like all important lessons, its never too early to be teaching children about road safety. You can start this process by always setting a good example as an adult road user and by making road safety an integral part of your daily family life.
If children are using bikes to ride to school make sure they wear their helmets whenever they ride their bikes. Use a solid lock for security and ensure that the cycles are engraved see your local NHW or police station for engraving assistance or PCYC to purchase microdot kits which can be used on all your valuables available for around $40.
