Area Coordinators Message
Many thanks to all those involved with the Logan Road Safety Expo both those who attended and all those who put in so much work to make the event happen. It was a shame that Polair was unable to land but it was needed in the apprehension of a criminal in the hinterland. The road safety message is still very much needed after road safety week with the unfortunate news that the road toll is higher this year than it was at the same stage last year. With school holidays here please take extra care as there will be plenty of children out and about on their bikes and of course when school returns remember the 40 k.p.h. speed limit in the areas around school entrances.
The worrying statistic from Qld Police is that people are still not locking their vehicles or ensuring that their keys are safely hidden at home.
Too many cars are being stolen by criminals as seen so frequently on TV news programs from security camera images. Make sure you lock your vehicles even when parked in your driveway.
Do not leave keys on show indoors (have a secret place for them or buy a key safe and keep them out of the way). Sneak thieves can take your keys and come back to rob your home or steal your vehicle.
I am pleased to announce that the first ever NHW week will be held between October 3rd and 9th and we plan to have some events during that time details next newsletter. Have you checked out our new Facebook page yet? Great to see so many people have and please friend it again as we will be closing down our old page at the end of the month. Also the new website is getting very good reactions so we hope it will be easier to navigate and keep you up to date with all the necessary information for your safety and security needs.
Our final meeting of the year will combine the AGM & our end of year social so I look forward to many of you attending.
Look after each other and take care. Geoff

DOGS ON PATROL
Taking your dog for a walk is great for you, your dog & the community. Crime prevention & community safety is everyone’s responsibility. You can assist police by providing a good description of anyone you see committing a crime or acting suspiciously.
Always carry your phone with you & report to police immediately if you see a crime being committed or phone POLICE LINK 131 444. One of the ongoing crimes committed is the riding of trail bikes in parks & local streets. Often with more than one rider on a machine & wearing no headgear, these bikes are unregistered & therefore uninsured so any “accident” will not be covered by insurance. The damage to the parks is obvious & the complete disregard of road rules & safety means that people are at high risk of getting hurt. If you see these bikes take a photo & note where & what time the incident occurred. You can then either report to the police or if you do not wish to be named, pass the info/photo on to our email for us to forward to police. The using of these bikes in parks commits an offence just as much as on the roads. We need to keep our community safe. Also at the moment there seems to be an ongoing amount of crime committed in Crestmead Park around the dog park areas & in particular the constant damage to the gates of the small dog park. Also the huge waste of plastic bags which are constantly unwound every weekend. Don’t forget it is your rates which have to fund the damage to be rectified. If you see something being done please notify council 3412 3412 or the police. Thankfully council have put in larger rubbish bins but there are still those out there who
seem to think they do not have to use them. Just do the right thing & put rubbish in the bins & remember to clean up after your dog fines can apply.

TIALEIGH PALMER
Remember there is still a $250,000 reward for information relating to the death of Tialeigh Palmer, as we near 12 months since she died, someone has the missing piece of information that can solve this case.
You can give information to Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 24 hours a day & you can remain anonymous. Please help bring some closure to the family for this crime.

Area Coordinators Message
Good to see another reduction in crime statistics last month but don’t forget we all need to play our part in not allowing a crime to occur. Do you leave your valuables on show in your car when parked in shopping centre car parks? A GPS, mobile phone, laptop or tablet computer is currency for those who need quick money. How about leaving your vehicle unlocked in the driveway or on the street outside your home? Do you ever leave the keys in the ignition when you go to pay at the service station or did you leave property in the unlocked car for those couple of minutes? At home do you leave your front, back &/or side door open when you are at home? Just being in the garage, garden or hanging the washing out is still long enough for a sneak thief to pop in & relieve you of cash, car keys etc. Tradies do you leave your tools on the back of your ute or in an unlocked van? Instead of letting the criminal have the upper hand do something positive & take precautions to not allow a crime to occur. It will save a lot of time, money & angst in the long run - more information from your local police station or the District Crime Prevention Office at Logan Police Station - if you are a community group do you need an officer to come out & discuss ways to minimise the likelihood of an offence? One of the ways to prevent a crime involving your vehicle is to have Safe PL8 screws fitted to your registration plates.
This will prevent the theft of plates to be used in crimes & save you money in having to get new plates made up. Details of upcoming events are under the police statistics or you can arrange to have them fitted at the police station - ring for details.
Next event will be our FREE AFTERNOON TEA to celebrate SENIORS WEEK on August 16th. As well as speakers from SENIORS LINE & HOME ASSIST, our friends from the Logan House Fire Support Network will be in attendance to give information & sell products to bring you up to date with the change in legislation for smoke alarms.
There will be a lucky door prize and although it is being held on the same day as the event at the  Logan Entertainment Centre, this afternoon tea is for those of you who are unable to travel. Please ring or email to book as numbers are limited to 50. Phone 0410 504 640 or email  crestmeadnhw@hotmail.com
On Sunday August 28th the third LOGAN ROAD SAFETY EXPO will be held in the car park area outside the Logan City Council Offices 10am-2pm.
There will be many stalls providing information relating to safe driving, plus entertainment including a free jumping castle & if not required to be operational we have the POLAIR helicopter promised to drop in. There will be a mock crash rescue by the Qld Fire & Rescue Service. Food will be available with a BBQ & drinks for sale by PCYC, & our friends from the Coffee Club Village Square will have their coffee cart cranked up! This event will have interactive items such as electric bikes, driver simulator, speed camera van, view of new police bikes, drug testing van & forensic crash unit.
Qld Rail will also be there with information on safe rail travel, & the All Terrain Vehicle from Browns Plains police will be on show. Bicycle Qld will be able to answer your questions on bike safety & we are pleased that our sponsors from the last road safety expo Toll Group will be bringing along one of their brand new prime movers. A free event for all ages with plenty of surprises!
Great news for local charity Logan House Fire Support Network with the donation of a decommissioned ambulance made recently by Cameron Dick, Minister for Health & Ambulance Services as well as local MP for Woodridge. The vehicle will be much more suited for the unfortunate events which Louie & Christine have to attend. It will allow for privacy and some shelter & comfort for those who have suffered the loss of property (or worse) in a house fire. Big thanks to Shane Drew & his workers from Drew’s Sign It Pty Ltd & from Quell & Logan Funerals who are so supportive of the LHFSN work.
Look after each other & take care Geoff

2016 January NEWSLETTER

Message from The Area Coordinator
I hope that you all had a wonderful time over the Christmas & New Year period & found plenty of events to keep you busy!  Unfortunately the criminals do not seem to have had a holiday & many offences occurred whilst we have been relaxing.  If any of you see anything suspicious please report to the police on POLICE LINK 131 444 or Crimestoppers 1800 333 000. I am afraid that in general the news over the last couple of months has been very disappointing in particular with the senseless acts of violence which have claimed lives.  Remember you can  download an app for smartphones from I Tunes, Google Play or Windows stores which can give you immediate information relating to emergency numbers.  If you need the Police Assistance, Crimestoppers, SES or Health Direct the information on the app can save you ringing the wrong emergency number.  It will also give you the GPS coordinates of your phone location so that the caller can read out to the emergency operator.  This app is free of charge & sounds like a very good addition.  For those who are deaf or hearing impaired the National Relay Service is available too. There has been a lot of burglary offences during the past couple of months which have occurred during the day time & the offenders have often been on foot.  Some of the people of interest have been identified as male aged 15 - 20 and of Pacific Islander appearance & are residents of the area they are offending in.  If you see anyone of this description acting suspiciously please contact Crestmead Police 3803 9555 or Police Link 131444. Even more fires have occurred during the holiday season as well which has prompted us to remind you that photoelectric smoke alarms are the ONLY ones that should be in use ionisation alarms are pretty useless and it is false economy to purchase a cheaper version.  Photoelectric alarms actually can SEE the smoke and start to emit an immediate alarm whereas the ionisation will only emit an alarm when the smoke has reached the position where the alarm is fitted this of course could be in another area of the house & will be too late for you to escape as you are likely to be rendered unconscious by the smoke by then.  A final reminder is to make sure that you have all alarms fitted with batteries an alarm without a working battery is of no use to anyone.  We will be giving away smoke alarm batteries at our  annual Neighbour Day event on March 27th which will tie in with the QFES reminder to change batteries on April 1st - DON’T BE AN APRIL FOOL!! Other events planned during the year will be another road safety expo & we will try and incorporate some day time events for those who cannot or do not wish to venture out to evening meetings. The Crestmead Community Carols at the beginning of December were a great success & those who    attended all agreed it was a very enjoyable evening.  Hopefully we can make it bigger & better in 2016.  Many thanks to all those who helped in the planning & on the day plus thanks to all who attended.  Thanks to those who donated raffle prizes & congratulations to the winners.  Thanks also to all who    attended our November AGM & end of year party a very enjoyable evening. The new committee will work hard to keep our suburb safe & secure. Vehicle registration plates are still being stolen so if you want your rego plates replaced our Volunteers in Policing will be at the Community Centre at 6pm before our next meeting to fit them for you.  If you are unable to attend on January 25th you can contact  Crestmead Police Station to make an appointment.   For those children who have received bikes and scooters for Christmas don’t forget the cycle track at Crestmead Park children can learn to ride their bikes safely without cars nearby.  It is a very good facility to learn to ride & gain experience.  But remember helmets are required by law!
Take care Geoff

Sun Safety
Did you know that in Qld the levels of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun are high enough to damage your skin all year round. The ‘slip slop slap’ message has been around for many years & this message has been expanded to 5 ways to protect yourself from sun.
SLIP ON A SHIRT - clothes from a cotton weave will allow the skin to breath or when at the beach/pool use a rash vest
SLAP ON SOME SUNSCREEN - water resistant SPF 30 should be applied 20 minutes before  going outside & then every 2 hours
SLAP ON A BROAD BRIMMED HAT - one that shades your neck/face & ears.  Caps or    visors are not recommended
SEEK SHADE - minimise the time you are in direct sun & use an umbrella/shade device when possible
SLIDE ON SOME SUNGLASSES chose some which protect the side of your eyes & fit closely to your face  Some popular myths exposed: Sunscreen provides enough protection– it does not   provide enough sun protection for your skin Skin cancer only affects fair skinned people-skin cancer affects all skin types Skin cancer only affects older people - high sun exposure in first 10 years of life more than doubles your risk of melanoma & can be far advanced when found Skin cancer is caused by sunburn - cell damage from over exposure to UVR is the cause  You only need sun protection on hot sunny days - it does not matter if it is rainy or cloudy, UVR is always there during daylight You only need protection between 10am and 2pm -UVR levels are able to cause damage from 8am!! You need sun exposure for vitamin D - most people get sufficient vitamin D from normal outdoor activities More information from:
