NEWSLETTER April 2012

Message from The Area Coordinator
The speaker for our last meeting from Seniors Enquiry Line gave us one of the best talks we have had. What a wealth of knowledge from Cheryl and I must thank her for all the information she passed on to our group. If you need assistance relating to matters for seniors & grandparents raising grandchildren or advance care planning for later in life, don’t hesitate to contact the SENIORS ENQUIRY LINE see enclosed flyer for contact details. I would like to thank all those who supported our recent Community Booksale at Logan West library. We were able to provide free safe plate screws as well as a good read for less than $2 and also sold a large number of sausages and drinks. These occasional fundraising activities enable us to provide the Safe PL8 screws and door guards to help make the community safer. So if you see our future advertising please support us and you may want to join the group - we have a good social network and if you are new to the area you will be able to make new friends. We will be at the Crestmead PCYC CAOS on Saturday April 21st so please come along & say hi. Let us know what YOU want for the suburb - what can we do to help engage the youngsters & make Crestmead a safe & happy place to raise your family.
Our May meeting will be held at the Crestmead Police Station & we will have a speaker from Queensland Police to answer your questions on crime and traffic matters.
We are again selling ENTERTAINMENT GUIDES -  only $65 & you will save that amount over and over during the next year. Contact details overleaf to purchase a copy.
Take care Geoff

WINTER SAFETY TIPS
· Install & maintain your smoke alarms: make sure you have an adequate number of suitable smoke alarms installed throughout your home & make sure you test & clean them regularly & change the battery annually
· Prepare and practice your Escape Plan: Develop a home escape plan and practice it with all members of the household. Assemble at your meeting point—eg letter box. Ring Qld Fire and Rescue Service from a neighbours house. NEVER go back into a burning house
· Check and Test your Electric Blankets: Check blankets for damage or frayed cords before placing them on the bed. To test an electric blanket, lay it flat on top of the bed, & then switch it on for five minutes to confirm it is OK, before affixing it to the bed.
It is recommended that they are turned on half an hour before going to bed & then turned off at the power point when getting into bed. Never sleep with the electric blanket on.
· Regularly clean your Clothes Dryer: Clean lint filter regularly. Don’t leave on for long periods of time & especially if you are leaving the house. Make sure they go through their full cycles, which includes cool down.
· Stay clear 1metre around your Heaters: Portable heating equipment should be placed in a stable position, a safe distance away from clothes curtains, tablecloths, and bedding. Keep a clear space of 1 metre around heaters.
