Area Coordinators MessagePretty hot & sticky so hope that you have managed to keep cool. When adverse weather conditions occur just remember to check on elderly neigh-bours or those who live on their own. A kind word or a query as to whether they need some assistance goes a long way to helping prevent tragedies which have occurred in the past. This was the starting point for the national Neighbour Day pro-gram which commenced in 2003. We are very pleased to be holding our annual neighbour day event on Sunday March 26th between 11am - 2pm at Crestmead Park. The principal aim of Neighbour Day is to build better relationships with the people who live around us, especially the el-derly & vulnerable. Neighbours are important be-cause good relationships with others can & do change communities. Social connection also makes us feel better as it helps prevent loneliness, isolation & depression. Neighbour Day brings together like minded people, resources, & organi-sations to grow stronger, well connected commu-nities. Responsibility for Australia’s Neighbour Day is about everyone - every person, in every community. ‘’We want to include individuals, families, neighbourhoods, communities & organi-sations to help us grow the community feeling & live in welcoming kind & supportive suburbs.’’ This is the aim of Relationships Australia who are the lead group promoting Neighbour Day.
There will be free activities for the children—face painting, jumping castle, model making, games & races. Chambers Flat Rural Fire Brigade will be giving rides around the park in the Little Squirt vehicle. Also very important information available regarding the recent changes in the smoke alarm legislation from Logan House Fire Support Network, plus free samples for the ‘’Don’t be an April Fool’’ campaign to remind people to change their smoke alarm batteries. The Project Booyah coffee van will be manned by PCYC for your caffeine hit! A free BBQ will be provided by NHW & we will be selling cold soft drinks/water.
Also lots of information & some give-aways on the day. Volunteers In Policing will be attending to fit SAFE PL8 screws to your vehicle registration plates or you can make an appointment with the VIP’s to provide a safety audit in your home. This is very important for those who have been the victim of a burglary or live near to a property which has been targeted - we will even give away some door guards to prevent criminals cutting through insect screens on your security doors to gain access to your home. Crimestoppers will be have lots of information & those who have been watching the ABC series ICE WARS will know the scourge of society today with people addicted to the drug Ice. The Dob in A Dealer campaign - 1800 333 000 - has been so successful so you can provide information anony-mously & this will in turn help police to rid our sub-urbs of the drug which ruins lives. Even if you have not been affected by knowing someone who takes the drug, you may become a victim of crime with them using any means to get money by stealing your prop-erty. In less than 10 months to the end of 2016 over 5000 reports had been given to Crimestoppers - you can do your bit & help keep our community safe. We will also be promoting the annual Operation Bounce Back campaign & again this year Logan City Council are providing give-aways to support this scheme which aims to prevent people having their vehicles stolen. Of course the obvious way to stop this is not to leave your cars unlocked in driveways or even your garage, & do not leave keys in an acces-sible place for sneak thieves to break in & steal. Once again SCAMS seem to be making the headlines so if you have not entered a competition you could not have won a prize. Banks & Government depart-ments do not ask for you to provide personal infor-mation or up front fees to discuss your accounts. Do no fall for these tricks - too many people do & your identity is the most precious possession you own.
The PCYC Crestmead Annual Outdoor Spectacular (CAOS) takes place on Saturday April 1st between 10am - 2pm. I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event.
Take Care Geoff
CONGRATULATIONSWe would like to pass on thanks for all the hard work put in by Louie and Christine Naumovski who started the Logan House Fire Support Network following the 2011 Slacks Creek fire. Since then the couple have managed to gain the support of the government to pass the comprehensive Smoke Alarm legislation which will hopefully be spread throughout Australia to prevent the needless loss of lives. Working smoke alarms WILL SAVE LIVES and the changes to photoelectric alarms took effect from 1/1/2017.
Their achievements were recognised by nomina-tions to both the Rankin Local Legend awards and the Logan City Council Australian of the Year awards. Well done to you both and for information on how you can help with donations to help victims of house fires contact admin@lhfsn.com or for full details on the new legislation please see:
