Following the incredible wet weather recently please make sure that you allow extra stopping distances in your car journeys and also NEVER enter floodwaters even though you may feel that you know the roads and areas well enough. We were advised by the staff at PCYC how quickly the drains at Crestmead Park became raging torrents and could easily have sucked a body through with the force of the water. Therefore all parents and carers ensure that you are aware of where your youngsters are since the weather can change in an instant and as we know lives have been lost when people have thought they could just get through that one last obstacle.
Don’t forget that April 1st is officially the day that the Qld Fire and Rescue service remind us all to replace the batteries in our smoke alarms. As their motto goes - DON’T BE AN APRIL FOOL - after the tragic events of last year with so many lives lost from house fires during the winter we should all remember that having a working smoke alarm is literally a LIFESAVER. For the cost of a new battery you owe it to your loved ones to make sure the battery is working - how about replacing one for an aged or infirm neighbour too?
We are having a book sale at the Logan West library at the end of the month and we will be offering to affix safe plate screws to registration plates so come along and get a bargain book or CD, and have a sausage and or drink whilst you are waiting. Don’t forget the inconvenience and cost of replacing stolen registration plates can be avoided by taking this offer - otherwise contact your local police station. Our speaker this month will have information for grandparents raising grandchildren and a free state wide information and referral service for seniors both of which are very important subjects. HOONING
Making Logan's streets as safe as possible is a priority for Logan City Council and Deputy Mayor Russell Lutton (Division 2) is calling on residents to help put the brakes on hooning in the city's streets. Chairman of the Logan Road Safety Advisory Committee, Cr Lutton acknowledged like many communities throughout Australia, hooning was a problem in some sections of the city.
''Alongside barking dogs, hooning is certainly one of the main issues residents contact individual councillors and Council about,'' he said. ''As a Council we certainly acknowledge & recognise the importance of doing what we can to prevent hooning behaviour whether it be irresponsible drivers doing burn outs, screeching their brakes, driving as a rolling road block, or street racing.
''Regardless of the nature of hooning, it is clearly dangerous and can be the cause of the driver responsible losing control of their vehicle.
''But there is a limit to what a Council can do. Wherever possible we install traffic calming devices but that isn't enough.''
Cr Lutton said addressing the issue of hooning was primarily the responsibility of the police. He said the establishment of the Hoon Hotline in December 2010 was an important step in the community taking a stand against hooning.
''Information provided to the Hoon Hotline is relayed to the police for further investigation, allows them to locate hooning hotspots, and take action to try and prevent its reoccurrence,'' he said.
''To assist police with their investigation, reports of a hooning offence should include the details of the behaviour observed, the car's registration and characteristics, and a time and location of the incident.
''I don't know if anyone has the definitive solution to the problem of hooning but with the police and Council working together through the Hoon Hotline & our traffic calming devices, we hope to make an impact.''

The 2012 Crestmead Annual Outdoor Spectacular (CAOS) will be held Saturday April 21st from 11am – 5.00pm at Crestmead Community Park Gimlet Street Crestmead.
CAOS is the largest event in Logan’s National Youth Week calendar, and is run in conjunction with multiple youth services from around Logan. The day will host food, drinks, rides, stalls and entertainment as well as a skateboard/scooter/BMX competition.
