NEWSLETTER January 2011

Message from The Area Coordinator
Thankfully not such a wet start to the year as last year but hope that you all had an enjoyable break over the past few weeks. Amazing to think that school is almost back so please take extra special care when driving around school zones. Having had a few weeks of not having to consider the 40kph signs around schools it is possible that you forgot the times that you must slow down. However do be aware that during the year speed zones will be amended to a uniform 7am—9am and 2pm to 4pm unless specifically signed so please pay attention that changes will be made between now and April 2012. The times that you may be used to could be changed.
We have had a terrible time over the festive season with road accidents and many lives have been lost or forever scarred needlessly through taking unnecessary risks or just not enough attention. So starting this year please leave just a little earlier for each journey, leave your mobile in the bag or your pocket, and make sure that your vehicle is roadworthy with tyre pressures set correctly etc. No phone message is that important that you must answer it whilst driving and certainly there is no excuse for texting whilst driving . However clever you may be you cannot do those two things at once with 100% concentration on the road!!
We have some big things planned this year so hope to meet some of you during the next few months as you can see I have been elected for a further year as area coordinator and I thank my fellow committee members for their help and support to make things happen for the benefit of the population of Crestmead. Please come along to our meetings and events they are for the community you never know you may find that bit of information you have been looking for!!
Our first meeting of the year will be held on the last Monday of the month and we have the CEO of Kidsafe to show us a range of items that will keep our precious youngsters safer. www.kidsafeqld.com.au There will be demonstrations in the car park outside the community
centre of the reversing camera black spots that have claimed so many lives over the past few years.
I hope that you will enjoy our events for the year
Take care Geoff

TEACH YOUR CHILD AN IMPORTANT LESSON BEFORE THEY START SCHOOL
Parents play a vital role in their child’s education, development and future. One of the most important lessons you could ever teach them is the fundamentals of road safety.
You should walk with your children to destinations such as their school and your local shops whenever possible and accompany them until you are confident they have a well developed road sense. Remember that children under the age of 10 should always be accompanied by an adult.
Be sure to point out any potential hazards and get them comfortable with important road safety actions such as crossing the road safely, watching for vehicles coming in and out of driveways and other safe pedestrian behaviours.
If children are going to walk to school throughout the year, walk with them and show them the safest route to and from school, this usually is the way with the least amount of traffic and the fewest roads to cross. Children should be taught to walk on the footpath rather than the road and not to play with toys or balls when walking.
Like all important lessons, its never too early to be teaching children about road safety. You can start this process by always setting a good example as an adult road user and by making road safety an integral part of your daily family life.
If children are using bikes to ride to school make sure they wear their helmets whenever they ride their bikes. Use a solid lock for security and ensure that the cycles are engraved see your local NHW or police station for engraving assistance or PCYC to purchase microdot kits which can be used on all your valuables available for around $40.
